Desktop app
The desktop app is DDM as a program of its own on your computer – everything the app in the browser can do, and one thing more: it opens documents straight in Word, Excel, PowerPoint or whichever program your computer uses for the file.
Installing
Download the installer for your computer:
| Computer | Download |
|---|---|
| Windows | DDM for Windows |
| Mac (Apple silicon and Intel) | DDM for macOS |
| Linux | AppImage · .deb · .deb for ARM |
The links always lead to the newest version.
- Windows – open the downloaded file and follow the installer.
- Mac – open the
.dmgfile and drag DDM into the Applications folder. - Linux – install the
.debfile through your software manager. Make the AppImage executable (right-click › Properties › Allow executing file as program) and double-click it.
- Windows shows Windows protected your PC. Click More info, then Run anyway.
- macOS says DDM cannot be opened. In the Applications folder, right-click DDM, choose Open and confirm with Open. From then on DDM starts like any other program.
Arch Linux
On Arch Linux, you install and update DDM with pacman. Add this to /etc/pacman.conf:
[ddm]
SigLevel = Optional TrustAll
Server = https://app.documentdistributionmanager.com/api/desktop/arch/$arch
Then install DDM with:
sudo pacman -Sy ddm-desktop
Signing in
The first time, sign in as you do in the browser – with your e-mail and password or through your company's sign-in. With Stay signed in, it stays that way.
Opening documents in Word, Excel and the rest
Where the app in the browser offers Download, the desktop app also has a button – in the viewer in its place – that opens the document in the right program:
| File | Button |
|---|---|
| Word document | Open in Word |
| Excel spreadsheet | Open in Excel |
| PowerPoint presentation | Open in PowerPoint |
| anything else, such as a PDF | Open in app – in the program your computer uses for it |
What you keep offline opens without a connection, too. Documents that can only be read in the app do not have this button.
In a list on a computer, the same icon is next to Download.
Updates
When there is a new version, DDM asks shortly after it starts: DDM … is available. Update now?
- Update downloads the new version, installs it and restarts DDM. On Linux, your computer asks for your password.
- Later – DDM asks again at the next start.
On Arch Linux, updates come with sudo pacman -Syu; DDM only tells you that a new version is out.
